A how-to guide for life
By Jennifer Smith
Date: August 17th, 2010
Actor Aaron
Douglas (right) is back in his hometown of
Kelowna helping his brother Chris promote
his new self-help book, Human: An Operator's
Manual, a book Chris describes as "human for
dummies."
Yes,
it is possible. You can graduate from high
school in a small town like Kelowna and
still see your name in lights.
Aaron Douglas, star of the new CTV drama The
Bridge, walked out of KLO Secondary School -
back when there was such a place - and into
a life destined to make him a star.
Yet
listening to his story this week as he sat
at a coffee shop on Bernard Avenue, one
would hardly describe his trajectory as a
how-to guide to acting success.
"I had no idea I could do this as a career,"
he said.
From
doing Shakespeare in City Park to several
years of laying floors and finally a role as
a diet consultant in Vancouver, Douglas
fully admits his penchant for drama had been
shelved for the trappings of a responsible
adulthood when an opportunity basically fell
in his lap.
It
wasn't until a man he was doing a diet
consultation with suggested he try out for
Vancouver's William Davis Centre, through
the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts, and
take some classes that Douglas even
considered a career on camera. One thing led
to another and he was soon offered a spot as
one of the 10 to 12 actors the school takes
in each year.
His
wife at the time ascribed to a "you only get
one chance at life" philosophy and Douglas
said he decided to take the risk.
That
decision, and the string of events leading
up to it, actually do make him somewhat of a
how-to role model for the self-guided
success story, according to his brother.
Chris Douglas, a local mental health and
addictions counsellor, figures his older
brother's life really is the perfect example
of how to make successful life decisions
and, as it turns out, he has just written a
how-to guide for others to follow in a
similar vein.
"I call it human for dummies," the
actor joked as he explained how the pair are
planning a joint book launch and lecture at
the Rotary Centre for the Arts this fall.
Aaron's life will serve as a real life
example of how to keep the ball rolling
forward as Chris examines how some of our
basic human instincts tend to get in the way
as we cope with a 21st century.
Over
the last 200,000 years our survival
instincts have developed to respond to
certain stimulus in prescribed ways, Chris
said, but with the rapid development of the
last couple of centuries, sometimes our
responses no longer fit the bill.
To
put it in context, he suggests looking at
how we all cope with a particularly
stressful day.
"Here I am responding to phone calls and
emails in the same way I would be reacting
to running from a tiger 400 years ago,"
the younger Douglas brother said.
Human. An Operator's Manual, as he has
called the book, tries to explain the
relationship between our reptilian,
mammalian and executive brain functions and
shares some of the scientific research
psychology has produced to help us
understand how to deal with challenges and
the relationships in our lives.
"You don't have to spend years in therapy to
deal with an issue," his mother,
Arlene Elliott said.
She
too works as a counsellor and says the
research her son is talking about can make
anything from coping with death to breaking
a bad habit make more sense.
The
pair share a practice, Elliott, Douglas and
Associates, where their philosophy is
explained in detail.
For
his part, Aaron says, he is hoping to give a
talk during the day for those hoping to
break into the acting field as well. Watch
the
www.elliottdouglas.com website
for details.
The
evening talk will take place in conjunction
with the book launch Friday, Oct. 1, in the
Rotary Centre for the Arts. Tickets are
already on sale at
www.selectyourtickets.com.
They ask Aaron how he got the role on BSG and
what was his reaction to the Chief being a cylon.
Aaron talks about The Bridge (and what happened with
CBS). He says that he's working on 'Hellcats' and
also mentions 'Killer Mountain' and 'One Angry
Juror'. The interviewer tells Aaron that their
website is called Fandomania and ask Aaron what he's
into. Aaron mentions some tv shows and some of the
books he has read recently.
Battlestar Galactica Online Gets
Some Familiar Faces
Eight characters from the show to hold
house in the SyFy MMO.
By: Nick Kolan
Date: August 12th, 2010
When it was announced that Bigpoint - a
developer of web-based games - had
acquired the Battlestar Galactica
license and intended to create an MMO
with it (to be called Battlestar
Galactica Online), it was met with a
mixed response from our commenters. The
response was based purely on the fact
that it was to be free-to-play and
browser-based, and typically
browser-based is associated with "cheap
and/or ugly". There was understandable
speculation that it would be a standard
game with few ties to the much-loved
Battlestar Galactica universe.
Today, it was announced that many major
characters from the popular SyFy show
would have a presence within the game,
rendered in fairly impressive 3D,
considering it is running in your
browser.
According to the announcement, the game
will contain the likenesses of:
Human
William "Admiral" Adama portrayed by
Edward James Olmos
Kara "Starbuck" Thrace portrayed by
Katee Sackhoff
Lee "Apollo" Adama portrayed by Jamie
Bamber
Galen "Chief" Tyrol portrayed by Aaron
Douglas
Cylon
Number Six portrayed by Tricia Helfer
Number Eight portrayed by Grace Park
Number One (John Cavil) portrayed by
Dean Stockwell
Number Two (Leoben Conoy) portrayed by
Callum Keith Rennie
The screens look decent enough, as you
can see, though we'll wait to see it
running in our own browsers.

Video description: Dork Shelf had a
chance to chat with Canadian actor Aaron Douglas
at FanExpo a few months ago. Douglas, best known
to audiences for his work as Chief Tyrol on the
acclaimed Sci-Fi series Battlestar Galactica,
had just wrapped filming on the new police-drama
The Bridge when we spoke with him. We talked
about his new show, his work on Battlestar
Galactica, what's on his dork shelf and most
importantly who he thought would win in a
drunken brawl: the Chief or Colonel Tigh?

Aaron Douglas
Frank Leo, Union Head
Frank Leo is
charismatic and self-confident, which
makes him a natural-born leader. As a
tough-as-hell-street-cop, Frank brings
to his new job as President of the
Police Protective Association an inborn
sense of justice and loyalty with
intelligence and passion. Frank can also
be charming with a mischievous glint in
his eye, which is why women are drawn to
him.
About Aaron Douglas
Aaron Douglas was born
in the Vancouver suburb of New
Westminster, BC. He spent his early
adult years working various jobs only to
realize what he did not want to do with
his life, until he discovered the
William B. Davis Center for Actors.
In 1998, Douglas
enrolled in the full-time program and by
the end of the school year, had found an
agent. It wasn't long before he began
steady work guest starring and playing
supporting roles in television and major
motion pictures.
Douglas starred on
Syfy's hit series, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA,
as Chief Galen Tyrol for four seasons.
He's appeared in major motion films
including, The Exorcism of Emily Rose;
Man About Town; X-Men 2; The Chronicles
of Riddick; Walking Tall; Paycheck;
Catwoman and I, Robot, alongside Will
Smith.

Billy contacted me earlier in the week asking if
Aaron would choose a Metal ballad type of song
(love, anguish, heartbreak) to play during the show.
I passed on the message to Aaron and he replied.
So tune in to the show tonight to find out which
song Aaron chose. Billy assures me that it will be
played within the first hour. Aaron also included a
message with the song he chose so I'm assuming that
Billy will read that out on air before the song is
played.
NOTE: For anyone that won't get a chance
to catch the show, I'll update this post later with
Aaron's song choice.

have to say something like:

But if I
had my true choice and picked a real song,
one that Chief would be proud of....

Below is the episode name and synopsis of the 2 hour
premiere episode of THE BRIDGE.
Below is the more detail episode synopsis from
the CTV Media Release on Feb 11th ...
In the special two-hour series premiere
(Friday, March 5 at 9 p.m. ET), beat cop
Frank Leo is fed up. Bridge Division is
understaffed, and good cops are being blamed
for a spate of mysterious drug rip-offs.
Then Frank's mentor, framed by the corrupt
police brass, commits suicide. When Frank
realizes the brass won't give his mentor a
police funeral, it's the last straw. He
leads a walkout strike, putting his career
and the careers of his entire division on
the line. Then, when Frank and his fellow
officers are blamed for an act of
"Contagious Fire", the brass sees the
perfect opportunity to get rid of Frank once
and for all. Frank realizes that in order to
save himself and change things, he must take
over the reigns of the Police Union. He soon
finds himself thrust into a treacherous
world of politics, intrigue and violence.
And just as he's become head of the Police
Union, Frank is forced to make a critical
decision that could ultimately bring him
down.

Aaron Douglas heats up Friday Nights in new police drama THE BRIDGE, March 5
The
much-anticipated premiere of CTV's newest
one-hour original drama series, THE BRIDGE.
Starring BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's Aaron
Douglas, THE BRIDGE is an authentic and
unique twist on the police procedural told
through the lens of a charismatic police
union leader.
The series debuts Friday, March 5 at 9 p.m.
ET with a special two-hour series premiere
before moving to its regular Fridays at 10
p.m. ET timeslot beginning March 12 on CTV.

THE
BRIDGE After the rank and file
unanimously vote tough and dedicated street
cop Frank Leo (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's Aaron
Douglas) into office as the police union's
dynamic leader, he begins his quest to put
street cops first and clean up the force
from the ground up as he battles criminals
on the street, police department brass and
corruption in the ranks. But the old boys'
network running the police force and the
city's self-serving politicians are not
about to sit idly by while a former street
cop makes up his own rules. Frank walks the
thin blue line as he battles criminals on
the streets, corruption in the ranks and the
politically motivated department brass,
letting nothing stop him from fulfilling his
unwavering vow that when cops are in
trouble, he will be there to protect the
protectors.
THE BRIDGE also stars Paul Popowich (ANGELA'S EYES, I ME WED); Inga Cadranel (RENT-A-GOALIE, MVP); Frank Cassini
(Vice, INTELLIGENCE); Theresa Joy (ALL THE
GOOD ONES ARE MARRIED, Sixty Days); Ona
Grauer (STARGATE SG-1 and STARGATE
ATLANTIS); Michael Murphy (Away from Her,
X-Men: The Last Stand); and Stuart Margolin
(THE ROCKFORD FILES, TOM STONE).
A very good friend
of mine, one of the producers of Battlestar
Galactica, lost her father last week to Cancer.
You all know my penchant for helping cancer agencies
raise awareness and money but this time I would like
to go in a different direction. She sat with her
father for a few weeks in the palliative care unit
of Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, she said
the care was exceptional, the nurses tremendous,
loving, caring and sweet. Anyone who has sat in a
hospital day after day with a loved one who is
seriously ill knows how tedious and boring it can
become. Lions Gate Hospital has in-room televisions
but cable is $15 per day. That does not sound like
much but if you are there for a few weeks it adds up
quickly. So I had an idea, portable DVD players and
a library of DVD's for patients and their loved
ones. So I am going to start a DVD drive. New ones,
used ones, whatever you have. I know I have dozens
of DVD's on my shelf that I will never use again,
won at the pub and will never watch or was given and
will never watch again.... Battlefield Earth....
ugh..... ;-) I am going to start with Lions Gate
Hospital in North Vancouver, fill it up and move to
another. I am going to contact several of the
electronic companies and see if anyone is in the
mood to donate 15 (there are 15 rooms in the
palliative care ward) portable DVD players in
exchange for some press from me. As for you, the
incredible fans, if you send me a DVD donation with
a self addressed stamped return envelope (large
enough for an 8X10) I will send you a signed
Battlestar Galactica Chief picture or a new shot of
me on The Bridge (man in uniform...ha). So grab
something off your shelf, out of the dollar bin at
Walmart, steal if from your little brother... ok
don't do that... steal one from Lowenthal, he can
afford it and send it to me. I will collect them
all, give them to my friend and she will build a
library for the hospital.
Thanks everyone, I know you get bombarded with
donation requests but at least with this one you'll
get something back. Just tell me which pic you would
prefer.
Send to me at: Aaron Douglas
C/O Pacific Artists

EDIT: If you are outside USA/Canada, yes you can
donate DVDs. I believe the portable dvd players will
be multi-region players.
And if anyone has a contact with one of the
manufacturers of these types of products let me
know. I am thinking SONY or Panasonic or some
company like that.
EDIT #2: Update on SSAE (Stamped Self-Addressed
Envelope). pipsi_pirate went to a Post Office in
Canada to ask out about SSAE. This is what she found
out ..... "looks like IRCs are the only way to go -
there is no way that canada post will accept foreign
stamps :("
EDIT #3: Reading this again I feel that it
appears as though this was wholly my idea. I want to
clarify something which I did not include in the
first posting. I left out the name of my friend and
her father with the notion that I was protecting her
and her family from the public knowing personal
stuff about them. I did not check with my friend
about this and I have found out I was wrong to leave
them out. She wants to do this for the hospital in
the name of her father, a great man named Richard
McArthur. The germ of this idea, the DVD players,
the library, etc was the idea of his daughter and my
friend Sian. We talked about that idea and came up
with the rest of the plan. Other than that the only
thing I contributed was taking it to my generous and
amazing fans. So, if anyone asks what this is about
please tell them that you are doing it for the
legacy of Richard McArthur, a wonderful man and
father.

Video interview with Aaron at Big Apple Comic-Con
Video Description: I got to kick it with

Big Apple con. Aaron's been in a ton of movies and
TV shows. Below is a little background on Arron,
check out the clip!
Never Say NEVER
posted: 15 November 2009 @ 11:50 am
Ok fine..... I will
take all of the abuse about to come my way....
But
surely you're on Twitter now? I will never use
Twitter. This incessant need for constant updates
and information on the minutiae of people's lives
staggers me. I have no idea why people would want to
know that "Aaron just walked into his trailer and
he's about to have lunch on set."
I am now on Twitter. My reversal in this decision
actually comes from a conversation I had with Brad
on his bus when he was playing MSG. Brad Twitters
and does so to let his fans know about upcoming
appearances, last minute changes to his schedule,
release dates of things, etc.... He feels it is a
very effective tool to keep his fans informed.
I have Michelle for that and she does a
tremendous job.
I have decided to follow Brad into the land of
Twitter not to tell everyone that I am going to the
kitchen to get an apple, am walking in the rain or
just fell down the stairs (although I am sure a few
of you would really like the last one), I am going
to use Twitter for last minute items that come up.
Michelle will always get information first and I
know she will post it here but there will be some
things that people do not have the time or access to
the internet to get. This is how I will use Twitter.
ex. If I am at a con and running late to my table
or a Q&A, I will post that. If I run into someone
and have a conversation that you might find
interesting, I will post that. Basically all the
things that come up with short notice.... that and
to s#%t bag Wil Wheaton.....
So yes, never say never.
Having said that, all those people who post EVERY
BLOODY LITTLE THING are still douchey....
There's nothing on there yet excpt for a synopsis
of the show.

Let's not get too
excited just yet until we hear something official, but .... Numb3rs will
have 16 episodes this season instead of 22 to make room for a midseason
show. There is talk about which shows that will be and The Bridge
gets mentioned.
CBS cuts 'Numbers' to 16 episodes 'Flashpoint' may take over Friday night slot
By: MICHAEL SCHNEIDER
November 4th, 2009
"Numbers" has been given a new one: 16.
CBS confirmed Wednesday that it had reduced the order of the Friday night drama from 22 to 16 episodes. According to Eye execs, net decided to make the adjustment in order to make room for midseason fare.
CBS has few holes on its schedule -- but nonetheless has several shows on the bench, including reality skein "Undercover Boss" and fresh dramas "Miami Trauma" and "The Bridge."
Returnee "Flashpoint," which performed
decently for the Eye on Friday nights, is a
top contender to take over the "Numbers" slot.
Net execs stressed
caution in reading too much into the fate of
"Numbers" -- it is only November, after all,
and a final decision on a "Numbers" renewal
wouldn't come down until May. But episodic
reductions are never a good thing, and
"Numbers," now in its sixth season, is a
contender for bubble status when the time
comes.
Among CBS' new shows,
the fate of "Three Rivers" is still in the air
-- but a back-nine pickup is unlikely at this
point.
Numb3rs Countdown
By: Andrew Ryan
November 6th, 2009
The end appears to be nigh for the crime-drama Numb3rs. According to a report in Variety, CBC has reduced this season's show order from 22 to 16 episodes in order to make room for the return of the Canadian-made Flashpoint and the new dramas The Bridge and Undercover Boss. Currently in its sixth season, Numb3rs has been gradually waning in U.S. Nielsen ratings since returning to the Friday-night lineup in September. At the same time, CBS extended the episode order for the new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, which now joins NCIS: Los Angeles and The Good Wife as rookie CBS shows with full-season pickups.

Aaron is scheduled to appear at the following

Today Aaron was interviewed by
Canada AM. The
interview will air on the same day that The Bridge

The reason the interview was filmed

August 13th and after that date the sets will be
taken down and stored away.

MESSAGE FROM AARON
:
Hey All
posted: July 8th, 2009 @ 09:42 am
How is everyone?
I am still in Toronto doing 14 hours a day 5 days a week working on The Bridge. It is looking really good and will be out sometime in the fall. I will keep you posted with new information when I get it, particularly a start date.
CBS has been wonderful and tremendously supportive and I could not be happier being a part of the CBS family.
I hope you are all very well and yes I am still planning on going to DC this year with my brother and friends but this year I am purely a fan, no guest stuff for me. I miss out on too much fun when I have to do all of the guest stuff.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I am still among the living and to say hi.

I have created a LJ
community for THE BRIDGE @
thebridge_tv.
I hope to see all of you over there.
I will continue to post any Aaron related info regarding THE BRIDGE on
aarondouglas but
going forward we need somewhere to post items for the rest of the cast
members, writers and crew and LJ icons, videos, etc. And we will have
the episode reviews over there instead of on
aarondouglas.
That way you can discuss all aspects of the episode and the subject
doesn't have to be just about Aaron.
I expect the new comm will be very quiet until the show starts to air
and we have something to talk about it.
